Review: Kindle Paperwhite (2015) – eReaders.nl

Late last year the United States launched its online store Amazon ebook shop in the Netherlands. In combination including the Kindle Paperwhite, an ereader that came on the market in 2012 and since then every year a small update was provided. In appearance, the new Paperwhite largely similar to the previous versions, so much of what is in the earlier review (2012 and 2013) was written is still valid. What are the key points of this e-reader, and how he relates to the main competitor in the Netherlands, the Kobo Glo HD

Never change a winning team , Amazon must have thought the introduction of various Paperwhite editions. The design still does not feel outdated to, and with only one button, the on / off switch, it is a very minimalist ereader. All operation continues via the touchscreen. No buttons to pages to save, like for example be found on older Kindles one finds on the last year introduced more expensive Kindle Voyage.

So what is it new? Especially the screen. The White Paper is now the same HD screen as the Kindle Voyage, and the Kobo Glo HD. An e-Ink screen with a resolution of 300 pixels per inch, twice as many as the previous generation. It delivers razor sharp text, and a strong contrast. With each new generation screens e-inktechniek goes again resemble something more like normal printed paper. You see this particularly in the flowing letters, where previous ereaders often had a bit of pixel lit letters.

Software
addition, Amazon has a number of enhancements to the software made of the device. There is the new Paperwhite also introduced a new font, Bookerly, specially designed for the ereader. At each font best possible readability of the letters, that was the goal when designing this font. Shortly Amazon promises moreover an update that the layout of books can be more focused on how publishers intended.

A number of smart features make the Paperwhite a particularly pleasant device to read books. Quickly to a certain spot in the book leaves is easy, for example, using the pop-up screen when you slide your finger up the bottom of the screen. Here you can go to another part of the book to quickly look for something, while the location where you left not lose.

While the Kindle Paperwhite less shines is the number of options to display ebooks adapt. The Kobo ereaders you can shape the characters to perfection to taste (thickness, spacing, margins, size) have with the Kindle you a number of predefined options, and you have to do with it.

Of course, the e-reader also has all sorts of extra features, such as built-in look up words in dictionaries (Van Dale dictionary and the Oxford English Dictionary) and Wikipedia, and translate highlight text, make notes and quotes to share with friends.

And a nice trick: In the settings menu you’ll find the email address of your Kindle, if you send a document here appears automatically on your Kindle

eBooks
shop Amazon is for our Dutch slightly less extensive than, for example, the Kobo store and Bol.com. You can not ebooks from other stores without open more on the Kindle, since Amazon uses a proprietary file format. Since we have largely moved in the Netherlands watermark security is converted to another format fortunately a lot easier, you can do this in a few seconds using a program like Calibre. And through that intermediate step, you can read the books of Bol.com, Bruna and eBook.nl yet easy on the Kindle.
What me at the shop Amazon is often striking that regularly temporary, daily or weekly actions ebooks are. So it can pay for if you have an ebook on the eye, as the various ebook stores to see how expensive the book in question was on that day.

3G
> Once you have made the choice to Amazon, you can also choose between an eReader with WiFi only or an ereader with 3G also there. Read your particular home then you have that last not much, but if you’re always on the move 3G connection is very convenient. You then in fact everywhere free access to your ebooks, at home and abroad, and can also just purchase ebooks in the store from Amazon. However, you pay here in the purchase price about 60 euros more. The 3G is then free to use.

Other models
Kindle Paperwhite is not the only model of Amazon that is on sale in the Netherlands. You also have the cheap Kindle, for about 80 euros. Biggest difference is the lack of backlighting and a less sharp display. There is also the more expensive Kindle Voyage. The Paperwhite has a price of about 140 euros precisely positioned between the two models.

Conclusion
> If you already have a Kindle Paperwhite, you will have with this new version probably will not need to update immediately. If instead you’re in the market for a new ereader, the Kindle Paperwhite is a good choice. It is a fast device, with convenient, Kindle own functions, user-friendly and attractively priced. The choice between Kobo or Kindle is a personal, each platform has its advantages and disadvantages. Personally, I think the Kindle platform easy to use, but is the offer in the Kindle store a bit disappointing compared to the supply of Bol.com. However, there are regular pick great deals.
