Why do not you go to buy Amazon Kindle – HP / De Tijd

ANP 29,783,436

It’s a bit sorry for the American Amazon that just this week finally his Dutch webshop has begun, but the chance that you in the coming years Amazon’s own e-reader, the Kindle, going to buy is very small. E-readers disappear and make way for tablets and smartphones as (co-) readers, as this study demonstrates convincingly. We do more and more with one device, including reading.

This week Amazon opened its own branch on the .nl department of the Internet, and there still sells e-readers and e-books about 20,000 Dutch . It is expected that the range the next time will be extended considerably, because in many countries you can be by Amazon from cradle to grave care. That number of 20,000 Dutch book suggests that not all Dutch publishers with the American giant went into the sea, but a big part. In Amazon.nl are also millions of English books for sale, but we could this week already ordered.

In the US, Amazon is especially so large because the first combination of a cheap reader and a large assortment of books brought to market. The many millions of Kindles sold there, and had therefore, because of the quirky format of e-books, once many millions patrons. In the Netherlands, although also about 1.3 million e-readers in circulation (often in the gift wrapping of the Saint, incidentally) but with a more open and can usually read all kinds of files, except for (official) that from Amazon.

E-readers have arisen at a time – it’s almost impossible to imagine – that we are all not yet played all day with our smartphones. They can only do one thing and that they properly. But because no one trait has to carry around two devices, they will disappear or at most constitute a niche market for the dedicated home reader. If the quality of the screens of smartphones and tablets improves in the coming years, it is not even rule out that they have a pleasant reading experience give. Who knows even the Amazonleesapp or those of Bol.com, the biggest competitor.

Amazon will be the trend in the e-reading also know (as they are even very good) and is already not much profit on the Kindles which still come from the German site at this time. It has a good first step, put on the Dutch market and will further expand its position And perhaps even more importantly, it takes a bite in the growth market of the digital book. Worldwide, about six years or 20 billion euros in order, more than doubled. And that’s only book.

About time: Amazon started selling ebooks in Netherlands – Bright

After years of waiting, Amazon today began selling ebooks and Kindle ereaders in the Netherlands.

It took a long time, but Amazon opens Wednesday than finally a Dutch site, log Nu.nl and NRCQ. The site Amazon.nl went live Wednesday morning. The US e-commerce giant sells here at first only ebooks and Kindle ereaders. The offer: 20 000 Dutch digital books, 3 million in other languages.

Amazons Dutch collection is thus smaller than that of rival Bol.com that 30,000 English ebooks counts. The reason is that some publishers are reluctant to deal with Amazon in the sea, because the shop regularly in other countries stunt with the prices, to the dismay of publishers and authors. That leader pricing would not currently done in the Netherlands. Nevertheless, does not it.

For example, publishing Podium

Kindle ereaders and apps

Amazon has three ereaders, which can be ordered via the Dutch to German Amazon site: the cheapest Kindle costs 80 euros, the Kindle Paperwhite costs temporarily 100 (3G version 161 euros), and the new Kindle Voyage higher resolution costs 192 euros (3G version 253 euros)

<. p> The Kindle devices were ordered for Dutch, long through foreign sites but was waiting for the Dutch ebooks. According to Amazon the software update that makes navigation Dutch in ‘the coming weeks’ appears.

Amazon’s Kindle uses its own copy. The Kindle apps have also been translated into Dutch. Unlimited leesdienst Kindle Unlimited is not yet available in our country. If and when Amazon in the Netherlands will also sell other products, is not yet known. The Kindle launch is the first step.

A difficult country for Amazon

In the Netherlands, Amazon will not get easy, partly because the publishers rather ‘ anti-discounts’ are. Most Dutch publishers Moreover abandoned in recent years the use of copy protection (DRM). They only use digital watermarks.

This way you can with other Dutch webshops easy to read ebooks purchased on other devices and other apps. But Amazon wants you in the Kindle Store ebooks purchased just read via the Kindle apps and the Kindle devices. Dutch consumers are wary of such a “closed model”.

There is a big competitor in the form of Bol.com that recently a deal with ereaderfabrikant Kobo also more than 2 million international ebooks here sells. Although this is less than Amazon, but Dutch offerings at Bol.com then larger. And that will be for quite some Dutch readers still important

But Amazon also has its own advantages. Nice working apps and relatively good and cheap ereaders. Perhaps later followed also the Kindle tablets, or Amazons critically acclaimed first smartphone Fire Phone.

Amazon CEO: ‘Al hundreds of thousands of Kindle customers in the Netherlands’ – MT Management Team

Amazon Netherlands

# one. Amazon comes to the Netherlands

Yes, it is (finally?) So far: Amazon today launched a .com version of its website. It will sell as e-books and Kindle e-readers, in three variants. Initially, the Dutch consumer more than 20,000 Dutch titles presented, plus another three million books in other languages. The e-readers from Amazon were all purchased from the foreign sites of the company, as well as foreign-language e-books, but it is the first time that Amazon is as concrete and direct focus on the Dutch market.

According to Jorrit van der Meulen, vice president of Kindle at Amazon Europe, the company comes to the Netherlands because the time is ripe. “We have hundreds of thousands of existing Kindle customers in the Netherlands and we have deals with all major publishers. If you combine those two pieces, you have a good offer for customers. ” Van der Meulen would not say how many Kindle customers are exactly in the Netherlands. However, he says that it is Dutch who bought at least one e-book at the Internet company, e-reader or one of the Kindle apps.

# 2. Does Amazon for the full 100% to the Netherlands

No, actually getting Netherlands – initially – a stripped down version of Amazon presented. Who wants to buy an physical book, must be completed to a foreign Amazon sites. It just is easier to launch a digital service than a physical, says Van der Meulen. “What we are launching for the Dutch market, is a Kindle store, with all services around it. That’s where we want him ready. “

About any other launches in the near future (the foreign flopped Fire Phone for example) make any statements. Well Amazon launches simultaneously with e-readers and e-books Dutch architecture Kindle Direct Publishing, where publishers and authors to publish books in exchange for “up to 70 percent of the royalties. Amazon says thousands of Dutch writers use the platform.

# 3. Which e-book Amazon will sell in the Netherlands?

Amazon stressed that all “major” publishers in the Netherlands to participate in the sale of e-books through Amazon.nl. Publisher Marble apparently not part of that group: the company said last week against the NIS that it does not agree with the terms of Amazon – which later bit more in this article. Among the publishers who have signed a contract with Amazon are famous names like WPG Uitgevers, Prometheus, Anthos and Dutch Media. The terms of the contracts vary.

In conversation with Management Team tells Ezequiel szafir, vice president of Kindle Content at Amazon Europe, which is about 4 to 5 months ago started negotiations . “It went very fast. All major publishers are on board, also we have many, but managed to bind. “Not all, small and medium-sized Dutch publishers to us According to the company’s local content is very important. “We see this in other countries where we compete,” said Van der Meulen.

# 4. What does an e-book at Amazon?

In America fights Amazon all times with publisher Hachette about the prices of e-books, but according szafir has not made the talks with Dutch publishers complicated. “When it comes to real business , people do not make decisions based on what they read here or there. They go with you to talk about the conditions that you ask and if they are good, they. ‘Signs Szafir says that Amazon wants to close more contracts with publishers, as Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos (pictured below), the ultimate goal is that each book (any book) is available within 60 seconds. Amazon denies that the maximum price on e-books enforces by Dutch publishers such as lawyer Hans Bousie recently claimed. Van der Meulen and szafir responded as follows to questions on this issue:

MT: What is the price of an e-book on Amazon.nl

Van der Meulen: “That determination publishers and writers themselves.”

You have no maximum price fixed

? Van der Meulen, “No.”

It is claimed in the market

Van der Meulen. “We talk with customers all over the world and they all say that a digital book should cost less than a comparable physical book. That we see and that publishers see too. We have had many conversations about it, but at the end of the day, in most cases, they note. ‘Price

It is possible that the price of an ebook higher then, the price of a physical book

szafir: “You will see that many e-books cost less than 5 euros, because that’s the way Dutch publishers to watch the market ‘
Van der Meulen’. But to answer your question: yes, you can. They probably will not sell many ebooks in that case, but it is possible to allocate the price.

You have no requirement laid down in contracts that an e-book should not cost more physical than the cheapest version of a similar book

Van der Meulen: “We do not talk about the specific negotiations. That’s what I got here. “Continued on to say

A look at the more distant future than. Will there ever be a Spotify-like subscription e-books in the Netherlands

Van der Meulen: “We have recently in America, England, Germany, Italy and Spain but we are still in an early stage. Ask five years again. I do not want to speculate on such matters. It is important for our competitors to consumers, hence. “

# 5. What is the marketing strategy in the Netherlands?

Step 1 of the marketing strategy of Amazon in the Netherlands free publicity . Please see Exhibit 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and, of course, also belongs to this article, this summary. Amazon invited the Dutch press from under embargo: the only thing that was announced was that it was a briefing of the company, even at the time the embargo ended was initially an embargo. In vain the way, as some newspapers broke the embargo last night, shortly before the launch.

Step 2 is the existing Amazon customers informed; for example, the hundreds of thousands who e-book for Kindle’ve already bought . Van der Meulen, “All our Dutch customers receive a notification that they can convert their account to a .com version. We will not introduce any major advertising or television campaigns initially. Why not? I do not think we have that is currently required.

# 6. Ok, but how many chances does Amazon?

Whether Amazon can break pots on the Dutch market, depends on who you ask. Even the company obviously thinks so. In the words of Van der Meulen: “We are very excited about the growth opportunities in the Netherlands. We see that more is read in every country where we launch Kindle, I expect it will not be here otherwise. “

The company is the largest competitor before him Bol.com, itself facing NOW. nl says it is responsible for 60 percent of the Dutch e-book sales. Director Daniel Ropers already throws some oil on the fire: “The question is whether a new foreign entrant for Dutch can still add a lot.” Knowing how you can win from Amazon? Hands on: Amazon Kindle eReader review (2014) First Impressions I – Trusted Reviews

Amazon Kindle eReader: First Impressions

With the Kindle Voyage covering the top-end and the Kindle Paperwhite now Amazon’s mid-range ereader, the basic Kindle is the entry-level option minus the frills. You do not get the built-in light or sharper display, but you do now get a touchscreen, access to the core Kindle features and new, more portable design.

It has the same footprint as the Voyage, but lacks the same finesse or attractiveness. The back does not use the same angular design opting for a charcoal gray matte plastic body where clause the back slopes inwards slightly and it definitely copes much better with Those greasy fingerprints. You can still comfortably get one hand around it and weighing in at 191g it’s slightly heavier than the Voyage, but not in the way you would really notice where clause.

At the bottom edge is where you’ll find the micro USB charging port along side the solitary standby button. The bezel on the front is thicker at the bottom, but other than thatthis is as plain an eReader you are going up to find. For £ 59, you can not really complain, though. It’s portable and the build quality is solid enough for something you want to sling into your hand luggage or keep in your pocket

SEE ALSO:. Kindle Paperwhite vs Nook Glow Light

Despite having the same size screen as the Voyage and the White Paper, sadly it does not use the same innovative display technology. The basic Kindle still relies on the older Pearl e-paper technology,-which delivers 167 pixels per inch (ppi) pixel density – considerably less than the 300ppi the top-end Kindle crams in

While the older screen. Means you have tech Tolerate the page refreshes common with e-ink displays, it’s still a solid display to read on page ghosting and reduced HAS Compared to notes predecessor. You will not get the same levels of sharpness Compared to a Carta or display brightness thanks to the lack of a built-in light, but at least you do now get support for touchscreen navigation, in-which our brief time with it Appeared to be nice and responsive.

Initial Verdict

If you are not all that bothered about reading at night and can live without the sharper display, the entry-level Kindle still holds up well and is a solid dedicated reading device. It’s portable, HAS access to arguably the most comprehensive storefronts and the screen still holds up well as place to tuck into your favorite ebooks.

Yes, you do miss out on some of the more attractive features of the new more expensive Kindles , but the core experience is still strong. There’s built-in Wi-Fi connectivity so you do not have to hook it up to a computer to download content, a four-week battery life and there’s the 4GB matching the pricier Kindles for space to save your ebooks.

The Kobo Touch (£ 59) is notes Closest rival and there’s very little to separate the two. They have very similar designs and bone healing have plenty of storage. If you want that all important ePub file support, you will probably side with the Touch, but Other than that the Kindle looks set to be the pick of the bunch ereader budget once again.
