Amazon Announces own e-reader, the Kindle (+ response) - Book Journal (subscription)

proudly Amazon founder Jeff Bezos says on the homepage of the online bookstore that he finally is: the Kindle, Amazon’s own e-reader. The device weighs less than a paperback (283 grams), can hold 200 books and costs $ 399.

more than three years has worked on the Amazon Kindle. Bezos writes that the goal was to design that would ‘disappear’ in your hand, so it would not come to be. Between writer and reader device The result is an elegant white device that will convince the reader of its ease of use.

according to Bezos in less than a minute

the Amazon Kindle has to pursue, beyond the book emphasizes Bezos. To upload new titles no computer is required: Kindle books can upload within 30 seconds wirelessly. It has therefore not require any special Wifi hotspots but uses the same high-speed data network as advanced cell phones (EV-DO). There is, moreover, be supplied with a cable, so that other files can be used.

Currently, all 88,000 titles available, including 100 of 112 current New York Times Bestsellers for $ 9.99 each. The Kindle has no subscription or other incidental expenses. Furthermore, a large number of news sources – newspapers, blogs – available. In total, the Kindle can hold 200 titles. The battery works over two days: Charging takes about two hours and should be done once in two days

.

Like other modern e-readers using the device for the e-ink technology, screen so that the screen does not flip. The Kindle can be attached to the email, so the device can be used to get files and images to view used. Besides its own (secured) AZW e-book format from Amazon Kindle supports unprotected Mobipocket ebooks (. MOBI,. PRC). TXT and HTML files. Unlike the iLiad device does not support PDF and it sounds some criticism. Suppliers of audio books and music is finally good news that the Kindle can also play. MP3 and Audible files

Bezos warns potential buyers that waiting is pointless to price reductions. Because there is no subscription fee is levied, the sales of the Kindle may be less readily funded from the cash flow of the content. Moreover, the price of $ 399 already quite low.

When the device comes to Europe, is unclear. The letter from Bezos is on the American home, but on the UK site is nothing to find. EV-DO does not exist in Europe: we have networks like GPRS, UMTS and HSDPA, which are still sophisticated. The Kindle is cable to use, stand alone, but how Amazon wants to take care of, connection to European networks is unknown. If Amazon chooses the same business model, with wireless connection, is still a link with Wifi hand or otherwise contract with a mobile provider that provides coverage throughout Europe.

The Kindle can be ordered from now and will be delivered from 29 November. (HvdK)

Comment Wiebe de Jager (Publisher Eburon)

Very interesting, these developments on Amazon, but a shame that the development team behind the Kindle yet again has chosen not to use other ebook readers is (while Amazon note in 2005, the French company Mobipocket has taken that standard does provide an “open”). standard for their own Currently ebook readers (by this I mean people, but also the devices) and publishers benefit most from a widely accepted standard, because the technology is ready.
