Review: Expensive Kindle Oasis is Rolls-Royce of e-readers – NU.nl

E-books are read more often on tablets and smartphones, instead of e-readers. Still, e-readers remain popular among avid readers. With the Kindle Amazon Oasis focuses on the hard core of this group.

Kindles are the iPhones of the e-reader world. They are not the cheapest option, and competitors like Kobo come in hardware close. But the Kindle software is organized and integration with its own bookstore Amazon can not be defeated by others

The first Kindle -. Then with huge keyboard below the screen – came on the market in 2007 the considerable price of $ 399. Since then Kindles have become a lot cheaper, and now you can already buy a basic model for less than 100 euros

The price of the new Kindle Oasis -. 294.87 euros including shipping – is therefore quite shocking. The device is even more than twice as expensive as the newly redesigned Kindle Paperwhite, an e-reader that actually does everything well. For the price of an Oasis you can therefore buy a Paperwhite and fill with at least fifteen good books.

To beat his brothers Kindle and other competitors Kindle Oasis has to be very impressive. Fortunately, Amazon has some interesting tricks devised for the Oasis.

Appearance

So, the device is more compact than other e-readers. The screen is the same size, but the housing is much thinner and 2.5 centimeters shorter than the Paperwhite.

The Oasis has an asymmetrical design with a larger screen edge on one side of the display of e-paper. There are two available physical buttons, which can be used to browse through books. It is therefore no longer necessary to print on the screen.

This is a fine choice. The Oasis is nice to hold with one hand and it is no longer using the buttons that you accidentally press the wrong part of the screen, so you call a page in the wrong direction overturns or the menu.

For the first time the Kindle screen can also run automatically when you turn it. As a result, the Oasis to use both left and right handed.

Case

Very striking at the Oasis is that it varies in thickness from 3.4 to 8.5 millimeters. At the back seems a big bite to be taken out of the machine.

This gap can be filled with an enclosed sleeve, which can be clicked magnetically to the back of the Oasis. The case also contains a battery that automatically charges the Kindle.

The case is made of leather and fits comfortably in the hand. The brown variant that was faded pretty quickly in my test unit; possible as the black or dark version less the case.

Together, the Oasis and cover a slightly larger battery capacity than the Paperwhite and Kindle Voyage. Amazon says on his site nothing about the distribution of the battery capacity between the sleeve and the Oasis itself, but according to those device have dismantled the cover account for more than 80 percent of the total battery size.

the battery life of the Kindle is always difficult to establish – a lot depends on the brightness of the backlight and the use of the aircraft stand. I myself used my test sample over a period of two weeks to read an estimated ten to twelve hours. Then, the battery was the cover almost empty, but still full of the Oasis itself.

screen

like the Kindle Paperwhite and Voyage, the Oasis a screen with a pixel density of 300 pixels per inch. Text and images look as sharp on and the different positions of the backlight ensure that it is always pleasant to read on the device, whether it’s pitch dark or very light.

The Oasis is missing it to support a reading function. The new Kindle Paperwhite can connect a Bluetooth headset, so that books can be read. This is useful for the visually impaired, or for those who prefer to listen to books. Since the Oasis is the top model of the Kindle series, it is strange that this feature is missing.

It would also have been nice if the Oasis was waterproof, so you can use it carelessly on the beach or pool use. However, until now Kobo is the only e-reader manufacturer that has brought a waterproof model on the market.

Kindles continue to have the disadvantage that you can buy books only from Amazon’s store. You ever step on another brand of e-reader, you can not move along your purchased books. You’re stuck in the (admittedly nice) ecosystem of Amazon.

Conclusion

The Kindle Oasis is an excellent e-reader with an exceptionally high price. The Oasis is truly the Rolls-Royce of e-readers, if you have the money it’s a great purchase, but for most people it is a waste of money to one to buy

The differences. However, inter alia, the Kindle Paperwhite and Kobo Glo HD are small, and competitors can be purchased for much less money. Most people can better buy a cheaper e-reader and invest in a good library.

  • compact e-reader
  • Handy buttons on side
  • Prima screen & amp; software
